In every migration primarily there are two objective; 1) least impact or mitigating risk of drop in organic keyword ranking and 2) maintaining almost similar traffic from organic search without much loss during site migration0
My site migration approach can be summarized in 4 steps; Assessing SEO Strength of Existing Site, Implementing SEO Elements on New Site on the Test Server, Taking The New Site Live & Monitoring The New Site
Assessing SEO Strength Of Existing Site
This step involves checking current site ranking and a comprehensive crawl of the site using various tools to collect data relating to site URL structure, meta tags (including page title and meta description), various heading tags, review of Google Analytics and Search Engine Console to identify pages by traffic. We also look at the existing 301 redirects, existing backlink profile and canonicals during this step to ensure that we have complete data of all the SEO elements from the existing site.
Implementing SEO Elements On New Site On The Test Server
This step involves coordinating with your development team to ensure all the SEO elements from your existing site are implemented on your new site on the test server. This step covers all your meta data and heading tags, title tags and preparation of 301 redirect file
Taking The New Site Live
This involves coordinating with your web development team to take the new site live during off business hours. As soon as the new site is live we setup search console and implement analytics and other custom tracking code you have. This step also involves implementation of 301 redirects from old site to new site and a thorough site crawl to check the new site for any errors
Monitoring The New Site
This involves regular monitoring of your new site for the next 4 weeks to check for any areas for improvement. It involves tracking ranking of keywords, monitoring search console and analytics data implementing any fixes if needed.
